Road, road bike, and MTB handlebar mounts

Bike stem mounts, a small detail not to overlook

The correct position on the bike comes from the delicate balance between the handlebar, pedals and saddle. Stem mounts play a crucial role in posture, fine-tuning the missing or excessive millimetres here and there. Finding the perfect setup manually can take a lot of time and trial and error. Alternatively, you can undergo a bike fitting to immediately obtain all the optimal parameters, saving time and effort. Very often, in fact, the issue lies in the mismatch between body and frame. In these cases, by adjusting an adjustable stem, you bridge that small gap that can become a limitation to performance. That is why we are talking about such an important component. And not only for professionals who must always give their best in competition. But also for relaxed rides; in fact, a correct posture allows you to be more responsive, put more power through the pedals and, not least, stay comfortable throughout the ride.

Choosing according to discipline and riding style

Stems for road bikes are similar to those for MTB. Structurally, there are no differences, which makes them interchangeable. If anything, what sets tarmac riding apart from off-road riding are sizes and adjustments. Stem length ranges from 80 to 130 mm, offering a very wide choice. If you want to prioritise comfort and control of the bike, a short stem is better. A longer one, on the other hand, increases stability and aerodynamics. That is why MTB stems are usually chosen in a shorter solution, while road riding favours greater range. The angle also has a major impact on riding style and varies depending on how the stem is mounted to the fork. A positive angle makes tight steering easier, adapting better to Gravity. A negative angle, often preferred in road cycling, lowers your riding position and helps you go faster.

A look at the materials

Specialized handlebar stems, Ritchey, Most, FSA, Vision: whatever the brand, it is also worth evaluating the construction materials. Carbon is the highest-performing option because it combines light weight with exceptional vibration damping. The same applies to aluminium, although it may not withstand extreme stresses. With steel, finally, you are on the safe side in terms of robustness. However, you pay a price in weight. In terms of price, carbon stems are considerably more expensive than aluminium and steel versions.
