Cycling and outdoor Jerseys for man

When buying a cycling Jersey, the main aspects to consider are:
  • fit;
  • fabric properties of the garment;
  • other features such as the presence of pockets, reflective strips, windproof treatments, etc etc.

Fit is important. A cycling Jersey must be close-fitting to help wick away sweat and keep the skin dry during rides or training sessions.
A loose Jersey can catch the wind while pedaling, making riding more difficult and reducing performance. In MTB, however, there is also the risk that it may snag on branches or other elements and tear, or worse, cause the rider to fall. On the other hand, it must not be too tight either.
The fabric used to make the Jersey is important because it determines its main characteristics, in particular, breathability. Jersey fabrics can range from very thin and lightweight (ideal for the summer season) to thick and heavy (specific to the winter season), perhaps with internal linings in warm fabrics such as fleece.
The thicker the fabric, the more it is able to resist wind, but it also retains more heat.
Some jerseys are equipped with features such as zippered pockets, reflective strips or ventilation openings.

Long-sleeve or short-sleeve jerseys?

The main difference between long-sleeve jerseys and short-sleeve jerseys is the amount of skin exposed to the elements (sun, rain and wind). Depending on the fabric and materials used to make the Jersey, they may be suitable for the winter season (when temperatures are colder and therefore a high level of thermal insulation is needed, as well as waterproofing and wind protection) or for the summer season (when greater breathability and sun protection are required).
If you are looking for minimal coverage, there are sleeveless cycling jerseys.

Cycling jersey features:

The fabric in cycling jerseys

Most cycling jerseys are made from polyester or a polyester blend. The main characteristics of this type of fabric are lightness, breathability (so it does not retain moisture, keeping the skin dry and comfortable), and the ability to dry quickly.
Normally, special antimicrobial fabrics are used or specific antimicrobial treatments are applied. These help prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi, keeping the Jersey clean and odor-free.

Zip pockets

Pockets are a useful feature for cyclists to carry ID, a phone, keys, and some cash in case of emergency. Most jerseys have 1 or 2 zip pockets to help ensure items do not fall out without compromising the rider's aerodynamics.

Vents

Summer and mid-season cycling jerseys are designed with vents that allow air to pass through the Jersey. Particularly useful in hot weather, they help improve thermal exchange.

Reflective strips

Essential for anyone cycling in low-light conditions (especially in the evening or at first light). These jerseys help you stay clearly visible to motorists, helping to avoid being hit.

Road cycling jerseys

Racing jerseys are designed to be aerodynamic and lightweight.
The fit is generally close-fitting, with stretch sleeves to minimize wind resistance. Pockets are often minimal, if not entirely absent.
Racing jerseys are available in many colors, although solid colors are normally preferred as they allow riders to add their sponsor logos.
The professional team cycling jerseys feature colors and sponsors specifically designed to remain visible at all times during competitions and especially during podium ceremonies and transfers.

MTB and off-road jerseys

Mountain bike jerseys are designed to deliver comfort and long-lasting durability.
Compared with road and racing jerseys, they offer a looser fit with room for protective gear and any other safety equipment.
Off-road jerseys are similar to mountain bike jerseys, but often have a more casual look and greater pocket capacity for carrying accessories (such as tire repair kits and CO2 cartridges) and a roomier fit to accommodate protection.

Touring jerseys

Designed to be comfortable and functional, cycling touring jerseys are made from breathable fabrics that help wick away sweat and keep the skin dry.
Most jerseys feature a front zipper, allowing you to adjust ventilation.
They also come with rear pockets, where you can store snacks, extra clothing, or other useful items such as your phone.
Cycling touring jerseys are generally equipped with a wind-resistant outer layer and receive special antimicrobial treatments.
You can find cycling touring jerseys in a wide range of colors and styles to suit every taste.
