Brakes and Accessories for Mountain Bikes, Road Bikes and Gravel

Bike brakes, safety and control on every route

A reliable braking system is at the top of every cyclist’s priority list, especially for riders with a very aggressive style. In fact, from the quality of the brakes fitted to our bike depend stopping power and braking distance, aspects on which it is always best not to compromise. The two main types are rim brakes and disc brakes. The former use a cable-actuated system that engages two pads which, in turn, press against the rim to stop it from rolling. In the latter case, a caliper closes around a metal disc mounted on the wheel. Disc brakes are more effective than rim-brake variants, delivering a smoother, more gradual, and more powerful experience. Another advantage is that they minimize braking distance. On the downside, disc brakes cost more and tend to overheat when under pressure. For both types of brakes, braking is controlled by the levers mounted on the handlebars. In this case, there is a major difference between the systems that activate braking, which can be mechanical or hydraulic. The former use a steel cable to actuate the brakes, while the latter use a pressurized fluid.

The approach to braking in MTB…

On MTB bikes and for all off-road enthusiasts, there is no debate: disc brakes have almost completely replaced rim brake pads models. On the steepest descents, in fact, efficiency comes first, especially when tackling narrow, winding trails. MTB disc brakes are completely similar to those used on road bikes. What changes, if anything, are the levers, which, positioned at the top of the flat handlebar, are oriented horizontally. Brakes and levers are almost always sold as a set, as in the case of the Magura MT7 Pro kit. Discs and pads, instead, can be purchased separately.

...and on road bikes

The rules of the road require different choices. When it comes to road bike brakes, for example, the supremacy of disc systems gives way to a better balance. If you are not looking for top-tier performance, disc brakes are more than enough. And you could opt for the versatile Shimano ST-RX810 + BR-RX810 kit, which also works well with the gravel. But when competition bites hard, you cannot give up a rim-brake system. Lighter and more aerodynamic, this type of brake lets you ride faster. And it is no coincidence that it is still the preferred choice of many professionals. The same rule applies to both: the levers are installed vertically at the ends of the road drop handlebar.
