Locks and chains for bikes

Bike locks, security at your fingertips

A well-made lock keeps your bike safe when parked outdoors. Unfortunately, even a brief stop can be enough to come back to a ruined day with an unpleasant surprise. The choice of lock is generally made based on the value of the bike, although a higher-quality lock can help secure any bike by discouraging potential thieves from even trying to break it. When choosing, it is worth considering the length, thickness, and weight, looking for the right balance for using the anti-theft device. Those who ride for many hours in a row, for example, generally prefer a folding bike lock, ideally compact and relatively lightweight, suitable for protecting the bike during breaks. In general, the best locks come with a key, although there are models (less secure) with a numerical combination. In general, a bike lock allows you to secure the bike frame, one of the wheels, or both components to an external element that cannot be moved (for example, a lamppost or a pole). Let’s look at the various types of bike locks available.

Portable models

Portable models are generally made of a silicone-coated steel cable and are the most affordable and lightweight. On the downside, they are the most vulnerable to cutting pliers. With a higher budget, you can choose devices with greater security such as the classic high-strength steel chain, such as the Abus Ivera 7210. An excellent compromise for those who need more practicality is the U-locks, including the AXA Newton Mini Pro, and bar-style models, such as the Abus Bordo 6000. The former attach to the seat tube, taking up almost the entire inner surface of the frame. The latter, however, are more versatile because, folding like a folding ruler, they do not prevent the use of a water bottle cage. The advantage of these devices is that they allow greater freedom in where the bike can be positioned. These models are considered anti-cut bike locks and allow you to secure the frame and rear wheel. In addition, if paired with a looped cable, they can create a bridge capable of locking the front wheel as well.

...and fixed solutions for the home

Finally, for complete peace of mind, the garage shutter may not be enough. In particular, when the bike is highly sought-after and distinctive, securing it to a wall anchor provides additional security. These models offer an ultra-stable anchoring point, as they are firmly fixed to a wall, to which the bike can be secured with a chain or traditional lock. Also suitable for outdoor use, they serve as a rack but take up much less space.
