Bike Bags, Saddle Bags and Backpacks: Carry What You Need on Every Ride

From a spare inner tube to the equipment needed for a multi-day trip, choosing the right carrying system helps organize gear efficiently and distribute weight either on the bike or on the rider. Bike bags, saddle bags and backpacks meet very different needs: compact models are suitable for essential tools and personal items, while larger-capacity solutions are designed for gravel, cycle touring, bikepacking and everyday commuting. The main factors to consider are carrying capacity, mounting position and compatibility with the bicycle. Available solutions include bags for the frame, handlebar, saddle and rear rack, as well as backpacks and hip packs designed to keep equipment directly with the rider.

Saddle Bag, Frame Bag, Handlebar Bag or Rear Bag: Which One Should You Choose?

Each mounting position offers different advantages. A saddle bag is ideal for carrying an inner tube, tyre levers, a multitool and small accessories without taking up space elsewhere on the bike. Frame bags make use of the central area of the bicycle and are particularly useful when extra carrying capacity is needed without wearing a backpack. Front and handlebar bags are suitable for clothing, food or equipment that needs to remain accessible, while rear bike bags offer greater capacity for larger loads. Before purchasing, it is important to check dimensions, mounting points and possible interference with bottles, cables, wheels or leg movement.

Backpacks and Carrying Systems for MTB, Gravel and Travel

When gear needs to stay with you after getting off the bike, a cycling backpack is a practical option for MTB, trail riding and longer rides; the range also includes models compatible with hydration reservoirs. MTB hip packs reduce bulk on the back and are suited to riders who only need to carry the essentials. For bikepacking, it is generally better to distribute equipment across several bags, keeping heavier items stable and using the available space around the frame. For trips by car, train or plane, bike travel bags are instead designed specifically to contain and protect the bicycle during transport.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bike Bags, Saddle Bags and Backpacks

Which bike bag is best for short rides?

For training sessions and rides lasting a few hours, a compact solution is usually enough. A bike saddle bag can carry an inner tube, tyre levers, a multitool and other small accessories without using space on the handlebar or frame. The required capacity depends on the repair kit and equipment you normally carry.

How do you choose a frame bag that fits your bike?

The dimensions of the bag should be compared with the available space inside the frame, while also checking the position of the mounting points. A bike frame bag should not interfere with bottles, bottle cages, cables or leg movement while pedalling. Frame geometry and bike size can therefore have a significant impact on compatibility.

What is the best setup for bikepacking?

There is no single setup that works for every rider, as it depends on trip duration and the amount of equipment being carried. For multi-day rides, combining frame, front and rear bags can help distribute the load rather than concentrating it in one place. Heavy and compact items should be positioned securely, while clothing and bulkier gear can be stored in higher-capacity bags.

Is a backpack or a bike-mounted bag better?

A bike-mounted bag transfers the weight to the bicycle and keeps the rider’s back free, which can be useful over long distances. A backpack is more practical when equipment needs to stay with you away from the bicycle and, depending on the model, may also accommodate a hydration reservoir. For MTB and trail riding it can be a functional option, while cycle touring and bikepacking often rely on distributing luggage directly on the bike.

Are all bike bags waterproof?

No. Waterproof and water-resistant describe different levels of protection, which can vary depending on materials, seams and closure systems. When carrying smartphones, documents or electronic devices, it is advisable to check the manufacturer’s specifications for the individual product.
