Hydration backpacks: an ode to freshness

With a hydration backpack you can hydrate at any time without ever letting go of your bike’s handlebars, thanks to the practical tube that runs along one of the shoulder straps. In addition, the reservoir is much more spacious than a standard water bottle. Used especially for Enduro, MTB hydration packs come to your rescue when the trail gets very rough. And although they are not very common on the road, those who have tried them have never gone back. When choosing the right model, we recommend carefully evaluating the backpack size and the reservoir capacity, comparing them with your riding habits.

Size matters

The reservoir dimensions are closely tied to those of the backpack. But not according to fixed rules. In some cases, the hydration reservoir is only slightly more compact than the backpack. Other times, however, it occupies only a minimal portion of it. Much depends on the type of route you plan to ride. With the Camelbak HydroBak Light, for example, you will carry a featherlight load on your shoulders. A loyal travel companion in the mountains, it hugs your back and does not move. And in this case, more than half of the capacity is reserved for the 1.5-liter hydration reservoir. Quite different is the structure of the Thule UpTake 12L, with a 2.5-liter reservoir against a total capacity of 12. Pump, spare parts, gloves and extra garments, provisions, smartphone and small accessories: in addition to water, there is space for everything else.
