Road bike tyres: tubeless and inner tube compatible

Bike tyres: the contact point that transforms the ride

Only a few centimetres of rubber separate the bike from the ground, yet rolling efficiency, grip, comfort and control all depend on that contact area. Choosing the right bike tyres means finding the ideal balance between speed, puncture protection and performance on the terrain you ride. Pirelli, Continental, Vittoria, Schwalbe, Michelin and Specialized develop different casings, compounds and tread patterns for road, gravel and trail use. A lightweight, fast-rolling tyre may be suited to racing, while a more reinforced construction is often better for training, rough surfaces or long-distance riding. The choice should therefore reflect not only the discipline, but also the season, wheel type and conditions in which you ride most frequently.

Road, MTB and gravel: choosing tread pattern and tyre width

Road bike tyres generally feature a smooth or lightly textured tread designed to maintain a wide contact area on tarmac. A larger tyre width can improve comfort and control, provided it is compatible with the rim, frame and braking system. MTB tyres, on the other hand, must generate traction on loose surfaces: the height, shape and spacing of the knobs vary according to hardpack, rock, mud or gravity use. In addition to the tread pattern, wheel diameter must also be checked, choosing between options such as 29-inch MTB tyres and 27.5-inch MTB tyres. Gravel tyres sit between road and mountain bike models: faster-rolling designs favour tarmac and compact gravel, while more pronounced knobs provide greater grip on technical or loose terrain.

Size, tubeless compatibility and pressure: what to check before buying

The tyre width printed on the sidewall is a nominal measurement, and the actual volume may vary depending on the internal width of the rim. Before buying, check the ETRTO dimensions, the clearance available in the frame and compatibility with hooked or hookless rims. Tubeless-ready tyres can be used without an inner tube when the rim, tape, valve and tyre are compatible, completing the setup with suitable tubeless kits and sealants. A traditional setup instead requires one of the correctly sized bike inner tubes. A bike pump with a pressure gauge finally helps set the correct tyre pressure according to rider weight, tyre width, terrain and manufacturer recommendations.

Features of road, MTB and gravel bike tyres

• Different sizes and diameters for road, gravel and mountain bike wheels.
• Tube-type versions designed for use with a compatible inner tube.
• Tubeless-ready models for compatible wheels without an inner tube.
• Smooth, semi-slick or knobbly tread patterns according to the terrain.
• Casings designed to prioritise low weight, comfort or puncture protection.
• Compounds developed to balance grip, rolling efficiency and durability.
• Different tyre widths to suit the rim’s internal width and available frame clearance.
