Multi-Tool for Maintenance of Road Bikes, MTBs and Bikes Gravel

Multi-tools: mini allies in your pocket

As the bike racks up more miles, the more maintenance it requires. Alongside routine tasks, there are emergency repairs that can cause a few headaches. Fortunately, multi-tools come to the cyclist’s aid when needed. Also known as multitools, they are ultra-compact kits that bring together all the essential tools. Sturdy yet extremely lightweight, they are built to last thanks to their steel body. Size also matters. And to fit in a pocket or saddle bag, they must necessarily be compact. No more than 12 cm long, they weigh around 150 grams.

The ultimate multitool

A classic multitool, such as the IceToolz Torx 8, closely resembles a Swiss army knife. In fact, the tools fold out by rotating on two pivots, one at each end. What mainly distinguishes the various models on the market is the tool selection. 10, 16, 30 tools: as the number of features increases, so do weight and price. A complete product like the Topeak Mini PT30 is a lifesaver for any unexpected issue. Philips screwdrivers, Torx keys, Allen keys, spoke wrench and chain tool: these are just a taste of what it includes. In general, the more fully equipped models also integrate a knife blade and a tire repair kit. The Pedros Rx Micro-20, for example, has a plastic frame made up of two elements that can be converted into tire levers. Often supplied with a soft protective pouch, multi-tools are sometimes also fitted with a hard case to attach to the frame.

Alternative solutions

Bike accessory kits are also offered in alternative versions. The Granite STASH RCX TOOL KIT, for example, easily fits into the handlebar tube. Available for both MTB and road bikes, it stands out for its distinctive elongated shape. A more vintage approach, on the other hand, is found in tool kits with a hook-and-loop flexible case. In this case, the tools are separated and neatly organized in a wrap that opens to reveal many small pockets for the items. Boxes with accessories inside follow a similar concept but with greater weight and bulk. Take, for example, the Topeak Survival Gear Box , a generous set of 30 tools, complete with a mini hammer. Stored in an impact-resistant frame case, they add about 250 grams to the bike’s weight.
